Online home education utilizes educational platforms where students learn via the internet within the comforts of their home. These programs typically require a learning coach to oversee their studies. Until now, this role has previously been held by parents. Online learning coaches can now take over these tasks.
Online Learning Coaches provide the following services:
- Explain how the online curriculum works.
- Give a sense of what is required including workload, time commitment, technology and more.
- Provide navigation help with the online curriculum website.
- Register as the student’s Learning Coach.
- Aid in setting up the student’s online account.
- Assist the family with all required paperwork needed by the local school district and the state to enroll in an online program.
K12 Online Public Schools and Connections Academy are state public schools. Although students work from home, they are still considered public school students. Both options are free for students and are required to follow state guidelines and require that students be logged on daily for attendance within their online platforms. If participation and progress are determined by the learning coach during daily check-ins, the learning coach will fulfill the requirement of electronically logging that your child attended school.
Students enrolled in online courses can participate in extracurricular activities at local public schools. Your child can do anything ranging from playing on a sports team to joining a school club. Extracurricular activities are wonderful opportunities for any student to grow and socialize. Navigating the details surrounding these activities can sometimes be a daunting task, especially when the student doesn’t attend the school on a daily basis. Learning coaches know where to find this information and can notify students and parents of upcoming opportunities at local schools. All information will be provided throughout the school year as requested.
Registering For In-Person Courses
Learning coaches will provide assistance in registering for courses at local middle school, high school and colleges where available. Similar to extracurricular activities, students enrolled in online courses are eligible to register for courses offered in local brick and mortar public schools. This too can be an overwhelming process for any online home education family to tackle on their own. If requested, learning coaches can investigate what your local school district offers for courses, information about each course and what is needed to register. Any required paperwork or contact information will be provided to the family
